The broad rule of thumb when calculating how far you can travel in a
day is to count each lock as 1 mile and then add this to the actual
miles covered over a given stretch of canal, and then divide by 3 to
give the total time in hours. The following times, calculated from the
pick up point at Burghfield Island, are approximate :

Thames
These stations, which are provided by the EA, are self service and operate on a
pre-paid card system. Cards, which cost £6, can be obtained from the Lock-keeper.
Pump out facilities are also available from a number of private boatyards and marinas
listed below. Prices vary between £5 and £10 depending on whether or not it is self
service.
